今天我們惠州社團聯合總會到加拿大領事館,強烈抗議加拿大政府於12月1日無理拘押中國華為公司副董事長、首席財務官孟晚舟。

抗議信函內容:

Hong Kong Federation of Huichow Associations Limited strongly protests against the unlawful arrest and detention of Ms Meng Wanzhou by the Canadian government on December 1.

The Canadian government pays no regard to the rule of law and just acts on the mere instruction and request of the U.S government to arrest Ms. Meng without any legal basis. According to the news, Ms Meng was inhumanely treated during her detention. Not only was it a serious violation of human rights that it calls for concern, but also a clear case of violation of freedom and liberty which renders the rule of law that the Canadian government has been advocating for to a nullity. The Canadian government should treat the strong protest from the Chinese government with extreme caution and procure the unconditional release of Ms Meng Wanzhou immediately.

As a matter of the principle both in rem or personam, Canadian government has no right to detain Ms Meng Wanzhou. The unilateral act of the United States to impose a sanction based on her domestic law on any non-American subject for committing an act out of her jurisdiction is clearly in contravention of the international norm and practice. Such arrest and/or extradition must be bound to fail in any reasonable and rational court of law. As Canada is an independent country, she should not just blindly follow the instruction and request of the United States and disregard the international norms.

Finally, the Canadian government should neither undermine the relationship between China and Canada nor do anything to harm and jeopardize the long-term economic cooperation between both countries. The Canadian government should listen to the legitimate demands from the Chinese government and treat Ms Meng Wanzhou fairly and in a humane manner. Canadian government should in the circumstances cease all unlawful action against Ms. Meng and release her forthwith and unconditionally.
