U.S. firm to invest $390 million to convert solid waste into electricity
http://insidecostarica.com/2014/04/28/u-s-firm-invest-390-million-convert-solid-waste-electricity/

April 28th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica could soon be home to the largest solid waste gasification plant in Central America, according to U.S. firm, Waste Electric.
According to company spokesperson Adrian Meza, construction of the $390 million plant, which would convert solid waste into electricity, could begin in about four months and would take about two years to complete. The firm is currently awaiting the proper permits from the National Environmental Secretariat (SETENA).
At full capacity, the plant would produce enough electricity to power 108,000 homes, which would be sold to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).
The 40,000 square meter plant is to be built on 11 hectares within the Coyol Free Zone in Alajuela.
The plant would take some of the 4,000 tons of solid waste generated daily in the country and turn it into electricity through a process called gasification. The waste used by the plant would ordinarily end up in landfills.

New York, March 20, 2014 – Guernsey-based Cahill Energy is delighted to announce it signed a historic agreement with the Government of Barbados on 15th March 2014 to build and operate a leading edge clean energy plant on the Caribbean island. Established to finance, build, own and operate utility-scale Waste to Energy plants in key markets, Cahill Energy plans to utilise the most innovative technology available to transform all kinds of waste on Barbados into clean, renewable energy.

Cahill Energy expects to invest up to $240 million (USD) in the proposed plant which is set to be built in Vaucluse, St Thomas, creating up to 650 skilled labour jobs, stimulating growth across the island and providing the Government of Barbados with several hundred million dollars in estimated savings over the lifetime of the 30 year contract.

Clare Cowan, CEO of Cahill Energy, commented: “Cahill Energy began exploring Waste to Energy in 2011 and our attention was directed towards the Caribbean by 7th Heaven Properties. While we recognize the country faces some short term challenges due to the impact of the global economic downturn, we believe the fundamentals are strong. We are therefore confident that this investment represents a phenomenal business opportunity for our investors and offers even greater benefits to the people of Barbados.”

Hon. Christopher P. Sinckler, M.P., Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs of Barbados, added: “This investment by Cahill Energy represents a “game changer” for Barbados and truly belies any doubt that Barbados is still a preferred destination for solid, and impactful foreign direct investment.”

The plant will provide a leading edge, environmentally sound solution to two of Barbados’s most pressing challenges: waste management and energy security. Using plasma gasification technology (one of the most effective and environmentally friendly methods of waste treatment
available), the plant will transform up to 650 tonnes of solid waste per day into clean, renewable energy. As a result, the plant will eliminate environmental threats posed by the use of landfill. The energy generated will provide a new domestic source of power for Barbados, reducing the island’s reliance on costly imported fossil fuel. The plant is expected to provide up to 25% of Barbados’s total energy needs and reduce the cost of energy substantially.
Dr. the Hon. Denis S. Lowe, M.P., Barbados’s Minister of Environment, said: “Cahill Energy offers us a real solution to becoming energy independent, while at the same time reducing our massive oil import bill. Cahill Energy has brought a Waste to Energy option to the Government of Barbados that is far superior to any other we have examined. We believe that our country will be changed forever as a result.”

AlterNRG owns 100% of Westinghouse Plasma Corporation, a world leader in plasma gasification technology, which is expected to supply the plasma gasification technology. The use of Westinghouse Plasma’s proven, patented, Waste to Energy technology (which is already in use in 6 commercial facilities worldwide) would significantly contribute to cutting Barbados’s dependence on landfills, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and transforming the island nation into one of the greenest economies in the entire region.

Cahill is advised by international law firm Taylor Wessing, a leading adviser in the alternative energy sector. The legal team is led by Dominic FitzPatrick, Head of Corporate, Commercial and Projects.

Senator the Hon. Darcy W. Boyce, Minister of Energy in the Office of the Prime Minister of Barbados, said: “This Waste to Energy project is a major step to put Barbados firmly on the way to its initial target of replacing by 2029, 29% of its oil based electricity by generation from renewable and alternative energy. Indeed, this project will help Barbados significantly to reach this target ten years earlier than planned.”

A PIONEERING energy firm has officially started work on a second North-East factory. Air Products is building another advanced gasification plant in Billingham, near Stockton. The factory will create 50 jobs, support about 750 construction posts, and operate from 2016. Bosses say it will annually take up to 350,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste away from landfill, helping to power about 50,000 North-East homes.

The development is backed the Government’s Energy for Growth scheme, which aims to save taxpayers’ money by securing a fixed electricity price from suppliers. The Cabinet Office last year agreed a deal to buy power from the plant for the next 20 years, which ministers predict will save £97m and meet two per cent of the Government’s overall energy consumption.

CHO-Power in Morcenx (France): a first in Europe

Showcasing the technological know-how of CHO-Power, the Morcenx plant (France) is currently under commissionning start-up.

It uses ordinary industrial waste from the region (37,000 tonnes/year) and wood chips (15,000 tonnes/year).
All the electricity is sold on to EDF, the high-voltage network being nearby.
Additional production of 18MW of hot water from the heat generated by the process fuels a vegetable greenhouse and a wood fire drier.

Coryton site to host green jet fuel plant

British Airways to fuel flights using landfill waste
Adam Duckett
BRITISH AIRWAYS’ long-awaited US$500m waste-to-fuel facility will be built at the site of the former Coryton refinery in Essex, UK.
Plans for the GreenSky project have been under development for more than four years now. British Airways has now confirmed that construction of the plant will begin in 12 months on the former refinery site, which has been rebranded as the Thames Enterprise Park.
The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2017, taking 575,000 t/y of post-recycled waste, normally destined for landfill or incineration, and converting it into 120,000 t of fuel including 50,000 t of jet fuel for British Airways. Once completed, the plant will support 150 permanent jobs.
The integrated biomass-gas to liquid process at the heart of the project has been developed by US process engineering firm Solena. High temperature plasma gasification converts the waste to synthetic gas. This is then passed through third party Fischer Tropsch technology provided by Velocys using a fixed-bed microchannel system to convert the gas to waxes which are then cracked into fuel and naphtha.
Solena says its unique use of plasma torches gives it the edge over other gasification technologies enabling it to convert much more varied streams of waste.
“We are always striving to reduce our impact on climate change and this first-of-its-kind project marks a significant step for the aviation industry,” says Willie Walsh, CEO of British Airways’ parent company IAG.
“The sustainable jet fuel produced each year will be enough to power our flights from London City Airport twice over with carbon savings the equivalent of taking 150,000 cars off the road.
British Airways has agreed to buy fuel produced at the plant for the next 11 years, in a deal worth US$550m at today’s prices.
The project continues the redevelopment of the site of the former Coryton refinery, which was closed in 2012. The assets were bought by a joint venture made up of Vopak, Shell and Greenergy, with plans to also refurbish it into a terminal for the bulk importation and blending of fuels.
