Talk by Mr Ralph Lai of the HK Export Credit Insurance Corporation

Ralph explained to us about how the insurance scheme was operated.

Primarily the corporation is to provide financial protection to Hong Kong exporters when they conduct business with overseas traders. Should an overseas trader go into liquidation before taking up delivery of cargo from a Hong Kong exporter, compensation covering up to 90% may be provided.  Coverage is also extended to cover country risk, i.e. when there is a foreign currency control which renders payment impossible.

Hong Kong Export Credit Insurance Corporation is a non profit taking statutory entity founded in 1966 with government financial backing of HK$30 billion.  It aims to provide trade protection to Hong Kong exporters against trade risks which render them from receiving payment in an attempt to promote export trading.

Following the Question and Answer section it was further stated that people should not hesitate to contact the entity for further enquiries to find out more about the procedures to follow in order to be covered by the scheme.

The insurance premium is set at 0.6% which covers export services and endorsement of insurance for a subsidiary company of a Hong Kong company who trades abroad.  Dennis rounded up the talk by explaining about consolidated insurance and a case study.
