Strengthening national security education in HK schools is crucial: Junius Ho
Hong Kong lawmaker Junius Ho became a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on January 18 this year.
According to Nanfang Daily’s recent report, Ho will bring his maiden proposals to the upcoming China’s Two Sessions 2023. Both his two proposals focus on youth.
Ho’s first proposal is “Strengthening national education, national security education in HK schools". Hong Kong was rocked by violence in 2019 and the National Security Law for Hong Kong was introduced on June 30, 2020. Ho suggested that the over 1100 middle and primary schools in the city should enhance national security education and national education under the guidance of Hong Kong Education Bureau, so as to enhance Hong Kong students’ understanding and knowledge of their country and foster a sense of national identity.
To encourage young people in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to participate in international affairs is Ho’s second suggestion.
“For example, we can recommend them to work in the United Nations (UN), WTO, WHO, World Bank Organization, World Climate Organization, and other international organizations. This will help young people build an international perspective." he explained.
At the beginning of 2023, 12 young civil servants in Hong Kong were sent to work at different institutions in the UN. The International Public Welfare Legal Service Association, founded by Junius Ho, recently received special consultative status from the UN Economic and Social Council, and will now have the opportunity to participate in relevant UN affairs.
In the future, Ho hopes that more non-governmental organizations and young people can participated in international affairs.
