風水在一定意義上來說是關於環境的研究，這並不是中國獨有。每個人都可以感覺到一個地方是否能讓人愉悅，這是出於本能。這同樣也適用於兩個世紀前登陸在香港的英國人。他們選擇了在半山建立自己的基地和總部，如總督府。為了讓這個地方更好，他們知道將需要一個更大、更寬闊和足夠容納的空間。但建設規模過大可能會遭致批評。為了避免這些，最好的解決辦法是建立一個環繞總督府的公園，這樣不僅使這個地方看起來更寬闊和雄偉，而向公眾開放的公園避免了批評。如此，政府和民眾的雙方利益被巧妙的平衡了。
Who says the British didn’t know Fung Shui
FUNG SHUI in a sense is about environmental study, that is not unique to Chinese. Every one can feel about a place whether it is pleasant or not, that is by instinct. Same for the British when they landed in HK two centuries ago. They chose the mid level to build their base and head quarters such as the governor house. In order to make the place even a better one, they knew that they would need a bigger, wider and accommodating space. But excessive scale of construction solely for the government use might invite criticisms. In order to avoid those, the best solution is to build a park around the Governor House. As such, not only would it make the place look much wider and more majestic, but at the same time the park is open to the public. Therefore, the interest can be skillfully balanced.
