A professor from Soochow University gave us a luncheon talk on “Science and Humanity”. The point he was trying to make was that one should not lose sight of humanity when advancing science. Scientists and scholars should not sacrifice and trade off morality just in the name of doing a project. He was sorry to see a postgraduate student carry out a thesis entitled, “the morality of being a female prostitute” by actually taking up a job to be a “princess” in a drinking parlour for three years. In his mind, the supervisor never should have agreed to such an assignment in the first place as it is immoral per se.
