Sir David Steel SC

He was an Oxford graduate and a contemporary of Mr. William Huang who talked about the real effects and advantages of the paperless trial.

However, there are some drawbacks for those who are not familiar with the use of computers and the reading of documents through monitors. Indeed difficulty is posed on those who work and use both paper notes and computers. Furthermore the system itself is not cheap at all.

The upshot of having paperless trials is that it tackles the problem of proliferation of documents. However caution and real concern must be taken as to the authenticity of documents printed out from the computer as “originals”. Also mistakes may happen in the process of document recovery, restoration and even when scanning documents into computers. He was not that fast nor advanced enough with technology to dispense with the use of paper bundles at trial. These views were well appreciated and acknowledged by the audience and even a co-panel speaker stated that he was a hybrid of both although he acknowledged that the future of the road was heading towards a paperless system.
