A Taxi Driver Story

An elderly taxi driver, Mr Chiang told me about his story.  Although he is approaching 80, his driving etiquette was pretty impressive.  He told me that he has been a taxi driver for more than 40 years and he only slowed down a bit in recent years.  He now drives during the weekend only and take rest on weekdays.  As our conversation ran along, he became more comfortable and opened up to talk about his past.  He told me he was a Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) soldier and fought against the Japanese in World War II.  He refused to fight against the communist because, to him, it was immoral to act against fraternity.  Further more he believed that the communists did a reasonably good job after taking over the Mainland.  “Corruption can’t really be weeded out, it exists in all governments” he said.  Even in Hong Kong, he recalled an incident of the Customs & Excise at Kai Tak Airport, where a cargo plane flying in from Cambodia was fully loaded with opium.  A certain “facilitating fee” had already been placed on the desk of the chief in charge well in advance.  A foreign inspector was shocked by the enormous scale of illegal import but he was still calm enough to direct his subordinates to arrange those to be replaced with tea being the manifested cargo for his inspection two hours later.  Everything was then fixed accordingly.
